About me

Hi, and welcome to my site. I’m Spencer Israel, a 2013 graduate of the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism.

I was born and raised in central New Jersey, and spent most of my life living in East Brunswick, a suburb about five miles from Rutgers University. When I was 16 I realized that I liked sports and I liked to write, and since then have been on the path to a career in sports journalism. While attending Maryland, I began to take a much greater interest in other aspects of journalism, specifically the digital and social platforms that now dominate the industry. Where I once wanted to be a beat writer, I’m now aiming for a job as a web producer or content editor for a sports website.

Through various internships and experiences over the last several years I’ve gained a wide range of skills necessary for a career in the sports media. In 2013 I worked at MLB Network as a freelance researcher and interned at The Baltimore Sun, where I worked on the sports copy desk. I’ve also interned at USA TODAY and Sports Illustrated, where I got a much better appreciation for all the work that goes into the daily production of a website.
